Penicillins are among the bactericidal antibiotics. Penicillins destroy the cell wall of the bacteria by interfering with trans-peptidase enzymes responsible for forming cross-links between peptidoglycans strands. Penicillins affect cell growth of active bacteria and have little effect on inactivated bacteria.

Pen IV

Drug Category: Antibiotic

Pharmaceutical Form: Sterile Powder for Injection.

Composition: Penicillin G Sodium 5.000.000 IU.

Mechanism of Actions:

Penicillins are among the bactericidal antibiotics. Penicillins destroy the cell wall of the bacteria by interfering with trans-peptidase enzymes responsible for forming cross-links between peptidoglycans strands. Penicillins affect cell growth of active bacteria and have little effect on inactivated bacteria.

Pharmacokinetics:

Penicillin G Sodium has a high solubility in water and is rapidly absorbed from the injection site. After absorption, penicillin is widely distributed in the body fluids and tissues. Penicillins are generally excreted unchanged, but about 20% of the dose is metabolized by unknown mechanisms. Most of the prescribed penicillin (60-90%) is excreted in the urine and in a short time (about 6 hours).

Indications:

Penicillin G Sodium is mainly used to treat common infections caused by susceptible bacteria, including: Corynebacterium Pyogenes, Listeria, Pasteurella Haemolytica, Pasteurella Multocida, Staphylococcus and Streptococcus, and the following diseases: navel/joint ill, respiratory infections such as pneumonia, Listeriosis, septicemia, urinary tract infections and the control of secondary bacterial infections caused by viral diseases.

Whereas this drug is used by the intravenous route, it is used to treat acute and severe infections.

Dosages and Administration Routs:

Horses: 10.000 – 50.000 IU per Kg bodyweight, every 6-8 hours.

Adverse and Common Side Effects:

There is a possibility of hypersensitivity reactions, which can occur with any of the penicillin groups.

Allergic reactions to these substances are occasionally serious.

Contra Indication:

In animals that have shown a reaction to sensitization to penicillin, should not be consumed. This drug should not be used concurrently with bacteriostatic drugs such as tetracycline.

Livestock treated with this drug should be monitored for at least half an hour after injection and, if anaphylactic reactions occur, immediately give epinephrine or antihistamine.

Drug Interactions:

Various Penicillin can inactivate In-vitro. Probenecid markedly decreases the tubular secretion of the penicillin.

Meat: 10 days from last treatment.

Pharmaceutical Precautions:

Store below 30°C, protected from light.
