Cattle: Ceftiofur is indicated for treatment of bovine respiratory disease (shipping fever, pneumonia) associated with mannheimia Haemolytica, Pasteurella Multocida and Histophilus Somni. Ceftiofur is also indicated for treatment of acute bovine interdigital necrobacillosis (foot rot, pododermatitis) associated with fusobacterium Necroforum and Bacteroides melaninogenicus.

Drug Category: Antibiotic.

Pharmaceutical Form: Sterile Powder for Injectable Suspension.

Composition: Ceftiofur Sodium, eq to 1 g Ceftiofur.

Each vial contains 4 g of Ceftiofur, which after preparation of its solution will equal 50 mg of base Ceftiofur in the form of sodium salts in 1ml.

Mechanism of Actions:

Ceftiofur Sodium is a broad spectrum cephalosporin antibiotic active against gram-positive and gram-negative bacteria including b-lactamase-producing strains like other cephalosporin, Ceftiofur is bactericidal invitro, resulting from inhibition of cell well synthesis

Indications:

Cattle: Ceftiofur is indicated for treatment of bovine respiratory disease (shipping fever, pneumonia) associated with mannheimia Haemolytica, Pasteurella Multocida and Histophilus Somni. Ceftiofur is also indicated for treatment of acute bovine interdigital necrobacillosis (foot rot, pododermatitis) associated with fusobacterium Necroforum and Bacteroides melaninogenicus.

Sheep: Ceftiofur is indicated for treatment of sheep respiratory disease (sheep pneumonia) associated with mannheimia Haemolytica and Pasteurella Multocida.

Goats: Ceftiofur is indicated for treatment of caprine respiratory disease (goat pneumonia) associated with mannheimia Haemolytica and Pasteurella Multocida.

Horses: Ceftiofur is indicated for treatment of respiratory infection in horses associated with streptococcus zooepidermicus.

Dogs: Ceftiofur is indicated for treatment of canine urinary tract infections associated with Escherichia coli and proteus mirabilis.

Day-old chicks: Ceftiofur is indicated for the control of early mortality, associated with E.coli organisms susceptible to Ceftiofur, in day-old chicks.

Day-old turkey pullets: Ceftiofur is indicated for the control of early mortality associated with E-coli organism, susceptible to Ceftiofur, in day-old pullets.

Reconstitution of the sterile powder: Reconstitute with 20 ml sterile water for injection. Each 1 ml of the resulting solution contains Ceftiofur sodium equivalent to 50 mg Ceftiofur.

Dosage and Administration Routs:

Cattle: Administer to cattle by intramuscular or subcutaneous injection at the dosage of 1.1 to 2.2 mg/kg of body weight (1-2 ml reconstituted sterile solution per 45.3 kg bodyweight. Treatment should be repeated at 24-hour intervals for a total of three consecutive days. Additional treatments maybe given on days four and five for animals which do not show a satisfactory response (not recovered) after the initial three treatments.

Sheep: Administer to sheep by intramuscular injection at the dosage of 1.1-2.2 mg/kg body weight (1-2 ml reconstituted sterile solution per 45.3 kg body weight) Treatment should be repeated at 24 hour interval for at of three consecutive days. Additional treatments may be given on days four and five for animals which do not show a satisfactory response.

Goats: Administer to goats by intramuscular injection at the dosage of 1.1-2.2 mg/kg body weight (1-2 ml reconstituted sterile solution per 45.3 kg body weight) Treatment should be repeated at 24 hour interval for at of three consecutive days. Additional treatments may be given on days four and five for animals which do not show a satisfactory response.

Horses: Administer to horses by intramuscular injection at the dosage of 2.2-4.4 mg/kg bodyweight (2-4 ml reconstituted sterile solution per 45.3 kg body weight. A maximum of 10 ml may be administered per injection site treatment should be repeated at 24-hour intervals, continued for 48 hours after clinical signs have disappeared and should not exceed 10 days.

Dogs: Administer to dogs by subcutaneous injection at the dosage of 2.2 mg/kg body weight (1ml reconstituted sterile solution per 10 kg body weight). Treatment should be repeated at 24-hour intervals for 5-14 day.

Day-old chicks: Administer by subcutaneous injection in the neck region of day-old chicks at the dosage of 0.08 to0.2 mg Ceftiofur/chick one ml of the 50 mg/ml reconstituted solution will treat approximately 250 to 625 day-old chicks. Reconstituted sterile powder is to be administered by subcutaneous injection only.

Day-old turkey pullets: Administer by subcutaneous injection in the neck region of day-old chicks at the dosage of 0.17-0.5 mg Ceftiofur/chick.

Contra Indications:

As with all drugs the use of Ceftiofur sterile powder is Contra indicated in animals previously found to be hyper sensitive to the drug.

Adverse and Common Side Effects:

Penicillin and cephalosporin can cause allergic reactions in sensitized individuals the use of Ceftiofur may result in some signs of immediate and transient local pain to the animal.

Withdrawal time: Cattle: Meat, 8 hours

 Milk, nil.

Pharmaceutical Precautions:

The initial medicine (not reconstituted) should be kept at a temperature of 2-8°C and away from light. Keep the reconstituted medicine in the refrigerator at 2-8°C for 5 days or at a temperature of 15-25°C (room temperature) for up to 12 hours. The prepared sterilized solution can be stored frozen for up to 8 weeks. Take the frozen solution first under warm water so that the ice melts and a clear solution is obtained and then take it as order. It should be noted that do not take the drug more than once from frozen condition.

Packaging: Sterile powder in the 1 gram vial.
