 Pharmaceutical form: sterile injectable solution

 Composition: each ml contains 100 mg menadion sodium bisulfite.

MECHANISM OF ACTIONS:
Menaphthone and the other vitamin k compounds are essential for the formation of prothrombin in the liver, and lack of the vitamin results in hypoprothrombinaemia. Lack of prothrombin in the blood breaks the chain of events which results in the formation of blood clots, so that when small contusions occur, prolonged bleeding follows, with the formation of large haematoma and the development of severe haemorragic anemia and hemolytic jaundice.

PHARMACOKINETICS:
Ruminants are independent of dietary vitamin K once rumination has commenced, and it is possible that most other species derive some of their vitamin K from bacterial synthesis in the large intestine. Like all fat –soluble vitamins the absorption of vitamin K from the intestines is dependent on the presence of bile and fat in the intestine Storage is mainly in the liver and excretion is via the urinary system.

INDICATIONS:
Menadione sodium bisulfite is a synthetic vitamin K compound used for the treatment of prolonged bleeding due to vitamin K deficiency states, as occurs in cattle fed moldy sweet clover containing anti-vitamin K compounds such as dicumarin or from toxicity due to ingested rodenticides containing dicumaral.

DOSAGE AND ADMINISTRATION:
Administer by intramuscular or subcutaneous injection.
Dicumarol poisoning:2-11 mg per kg body weight , every 10-12 hours for dogs , cats , and horses.

Large animal: for treatment of prolonged bleeding due to vitamin K deficiency states: 50 mg per 50 kg body weight.Dogs:for prevention of bleeding after surgery: 2-10 mg menadion .

ADVERSE AND COMMON SIDE EFEECTS
Menadion sodium bisulfite has resulted in acute renal failure in horses when given at the recommended dose of 2.2 to 11 mg/kg intravenously.
