Drug Category: Electrolyte

Drug Form: sterile injectable solution.

Composition: Each ml contains 84 mg of sodium bicarbonate.

Mechanism of action:

The osmolarity of this solution is 2000 smol per liter (approximately 7 times the normal osmolarity of blood). Hypertonic solutions can directly and indirectly affect blood circulation. When serum osmolarity suddenly increases, vascular smooth muscle relaxes and vasodilation occurs. Hypertonic solutions after intravenous injection increase heart rate and blood pressure and increase ACTH and cortisol levels in the blood. Sodium bicarbonate is a systemic alkalizing agent that, when administered intravenously, will increase plasma bicarbonate and raise the pH of the blood by buffering the concentration of hydrogen ions, alleviating the clinical signs of acidosis.

Indications:

Hypertonic sodium bicarbonate solution 8.4% is used in the following cases:

1. In severe acidosis where the pH of the blood is lower than 7/2.

2. Severe diarrhea in calves

3. D-Lactic-Acidosis

4. Grain Engorgement

Dosages and Administration Route:

4 to 5 ml per kilogram of body weight intravenously

Precautions:

The injection rate should not exceed 1 ml per kilogram of body weight per minute.

Contraindications:

Do not use in severe alkalosis.

Withdrawal Period: Nil.

Pharmaceutical precautions:

Store below 30°C, protected from light. Do not freeze.
