PHARMACOLOGY:
Gonadorelin is a decapeptide hypothalamic releasing factor responsible for stimulating the release of FSH and LH from the anterior pituitary gland. Administration of Gonadorelin releases LH and FSH from the anterior pituitary gland with peak levels occuring after 1-2 hours and the levels then decline rapidly within 4-6 hour. The gonadotrophic hormones control the estrous cycle of the female and modulate testicular function in the male. In the female, FSH is responsible mainly for growth of the follicle by binding to granulosa cells and stimulating oestradiol production. LH is responsible for final maturation and ovulation by binding to the thecal cells of the developing follicle and stimulating the synthesis of androgens. These androgens, mainly testosterone and androstenedione, diffuse across to the granulosa cells, and are converted to oestradiol- 17β by the aromatase system. This is activated by FSH.
